This list covers resource needs not specifically related to the courses offered by the University's five Faculties It also covers subjects studied across all Faculties. Profiled are:
This subject listing of is not complete. Changes have and will be made as the university curriculum is developed further and classes are planned in more detail. Additional subjects and faculties will be added in future years. This list will be updated when further information becomes available. An Institute for English language studies is planned for development over the next few years. A number of new faculties and courses have been proposed for future years including Timor Studies, Information Technology, Health Studies, Legal Studies, Media and Communications, Chemistry, Physics, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Architecture. Timor LorosaeA comprehensive historical and cultural collection of Timor Lorosae resources: histories, politics, autobiographies, cultural records, TV, radio and published news coverage on film, video & CD, photographic records, music and other archival resources of Timor Lorosae. All students do a course on the history and culture of East Timor. The East Timorese have not previously had access to their own history. For those with archival materials, the Northern Territory University Library is digitising their collection of East Timor documents. This very important project will provide the East Timorese with access to historic documents and photos on CDROM long before there is the capacity to create a physical archives collection in East Timor. Please contact them if you have material to contribute. Reference ResourcesGeneral reference works including world and regional atlases and maps, specialist and general dictionaries and encyclopaedias, language dictionaries (incl. Indonesian / English / Portuguese / Tetum), almanacs, chronologies, profiles of world history, handbooks & manuals, bibliographies (including bibliographic databases), and, in particular, language resources such as translating dictionaries, thesauri, grammatical usage guides and other tools appropriate to the multilingual needs of the university. Research CentreIncludes: Research technique, methodology and practice, statistics, social statistics, statistical analysis, social research methods, survey methods, laboratory technique, research methods & experiment strategy, information systems management, computer studies Institute of LinguisticsIncludes: Language theory, descriptive and comparative linguistics, language structure, language analysis, philosophy of language, sociolinguistics, semantics, phonology, syntax, grammar, typology, morphology, vocabulary. Language dictionaries (Tetum/Port, Tetum/Eng, Indon/Eng, Indon/Port, Port/Eng), grammar guides, language learning & teaching resources General SubjectsThese subjects cover areas of interest to all students beyond the scope of their formal studies. They are not all related to the University's curriculum but are of importance to the future of East Timor. Computer Studies Manuals for Microsoft Windows/Word/Excel 95-2000, Access, Front Page and similar applications, desktop publishing, graphics and other multimedia resources (including Adobe and Macromedia products), appropriate licensed software. Language Skills Any appropriate tools and publications for teaching English and Portuguese as a second language including translation dictionaries, grammar guides, phrase books, introductory training manuals, lesson plans, illustrated word sheets and flash cards, videos and CDROMs. Media Studies Particularly in the Asian and Pacific regions, incl. journalism, newspapers, radio, television and film production, and the Internet. Community Services Community organizing, NGO management, negotiating skills, communications skills, conflict resolution, gender analysis and training, experiential learning, participatory action research, environmental issues, popular education, adult literacy, globalization, small business development. Health & Welfare Primary health care, AIDS, HIV, Malaria, TB and tropical diseases prevention and care, reproductive health, nutrition, fitness, drug, alcohol and tobacco education, environmental health, trauma counselling, domestic violence, community health care and psychology, dental care.
