Third Project Period
Building problems consumed a great deal of valuable time, playing havoc with the training program
|
In January 2002, Judy Blood returned, as a volunteer funded by Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA, to continue training and support work with the UNTL Library team for a further 3 months - and to see the extraordinary changes made in the last year.
This project period is important in a number of ways:
- Basic library services have been established in the new library building and
students gained access to the library for the first time in the first week of
the project period (Jan 21st 2002)
- Training and support is needed to develop a fully networked online library
system, to establish the Athena online circulation system and student access to
the catalogue, to review online catalogue progress, and develop procedures for
the extensive Reserve Collection - all essential priorities.
- Assistance is needed in further developing and implementing plans for the
library IT network and the Multimedia Centre.
- Significant problems with the refurbishment of the building (including
seriously leaking roofs, excessive heat and dust problems, poor ventilation,
security questions and other logistical issues for staff) have required
considerable negotiations to rectify and additional submissions for
funding.
- Detailed and up-to-date information was required to provide the growing
support network in Australia and potential funding agencies with priorities for
development and essential needs of the library.
- A fuller assessment of training and support needs can now be made and future
training programs outlined in more detail.
- Discussions with library staff, key University staff and aid agencies are
possible, something impossible to do from Australia.
