SIDNUET project signed for UNTL

11 December 2005

The University of East Timor has become a partner for the project known as SIDNUET : Staff and Institutional Development for the National University of East Timor which is being funded throught the Asia-Link Programme. http://europa.eu.int/comm/europeaid/projects/asia-link/index_en.htm

One of the prime objectives of the project is the installation of a campus wide computer network as well as an Internet connection, which will enable greater communication links in terms of administration, research, and information sharing, both within the University and to the world beyond.

What does this mean for the development of the UNTL Library? The Library staff will be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the project. Computer based information literacy proficiency will be an important skill that Library staff will need to develop to keep pace as these developments take place. SIDNUET proposes to instill these skills "through attendance at the planned short courses and placement for librarians. Work with the full range of electronic library facilities at UM and US will stand them in good stead as the facilities grow little by little in their own institution". In addition the project will also involve "the development of the Portuguese and English language services of the university library". Project partners are the Universities of Minho (Portugal) and Strathclyde (Scotland, United Kingdom), the Universidade Nacional Timor Lorosa'e (UNTL).
