Project Update: July 2002

31 July 2002

Here is the latest news on the UNTL Library Project.

Shelving

Extensive Brownbuilt shelving is being donated by ANU but costs and logistics to transport them to Dili remain a serious problem. Union Aid Abroad – APHEDA is seeking funds and assistance. Thousands of books remain unprocessed and inaccessible because there are no shelves to put them on.

Training & Support

In January 2002, Judy Blood went back to Dili to work for another three months funded and supported by Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA. She provided training and support and dealt with structural problems faced in the new building. USAID have provided funds to replace the roof.

Further funds are required for further necessary structural alterations, a loans counter, shelving and study and computer benches.

The Northern Territory University (NTU) is developing a training program for 4 UNTL Library staff in Darwin, but funding remains a problem.

Friends Group

The Melbourne Friends of the UNTL Library Group has been established and is actively supporting the project. The Sydney Friends group is creating a national co-ordinating committee and plans fund raising and other support activities.
