Priorities

Funds for Indonesian books are most needed for the newly reopened Library after 7 mths closure
Funds for Indonesian books are most needed for the newly reopened Library after 7 mths closure

Funds for book purchases and the donation of suitable Indonesian language resources are most needed.

These will provide teaching staff with source material for class preparation and curriculum development. They are also needed to build the existing collection to sufficient levels so that students can have open access to books.

In particular there is a serious shortage of specialist high demand texts such as Tetum grammar books and dictionaries, translation dictionaries (Tetum / English / Indonesian / Portuguese), resources for teaching English and computer skills.

Most particularly, it is important to send many copies of any books and AV resources about East Timor. The East Timorese are now allowed access to their own history for the first time. Each student will undertake a course on the history of East Timor but there are only a very small and precious handful of books about East Timor in the library.

The library's collection will be multilingual. Resources in Indonesian, Portuguese, English and Tetum are all wanted.

University courses

It is important that all donations of information resources focus on the subjects being taught at the University.

There are 5 faculties at the University.

  • Agriculture
  • Education & Teacher Training
  • Political Science
  • Engineering
  • Economics

First year students study a common generalist course.

UNTL’s Institute of Linguistics and the Research Center opened in June 2001.

A number of new faculties and courses have been proposed for future years including Timor Studies, Information Technology, Health Studies, Legal Studies, Media and Communications, Chemistry, Physics, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Architecture.

For a detailed listing of subjects studied at UNTL go to Subject Profiles. Both individual Faculty lists and a printable list of all Faculty subjects are available. The listings are not complete and will be updated when further information becomes available.

Other Priorities

If possible, it is desirable to establish document delivery and interlibrary lending agreements with Indonesian and Australian University libraries to support and compensate for the limited resources available in East Timor.

Because many books and other resources are being collected it is important that each capital city in Australia develop secure free storage space to stockpile donations until it is possible and appropriate to send them to Dili. It is also important to raise funds to cover shipping costs.
