Ways You Can Help

Top priority is funds for more equipment & support staff to establish Multimedia Centre & classroom
Top priority is funds for more equipment & support staff to establish Multimedia Centre & classroom

If you would like to assist the UNTL Library Project and become more involved you could help in a number of ways - logistic and administrative support, collecting resources, promoting the project, raising funds or making a donation, just to name a few. At whatever level, your support and contributions will be welcome.

Some examples of possible support activities include:

Support Activities

  • become involved in Friends Group activities (so far there are branches in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne) contact us.
  • start a new state or regional branch of Friends of UNTL Library Group (we can provide promotional materials and advice),
  • make a donation - by cheque, credit card or online, or arrange payroll deductions
  • check the updates pages on this site to find out the latest news, and activities,
  • purchase or arrange donations of materials as outlined in the needs list (even if just a box of pens/pencils or floppy/CD discs – they would always be welcome),
  • solicit donations of library supplies, resource materials and equipment,
  • raise funds for resources and equipment in your own community or workplace, or assist with Friends Group fund raising efforts (see below),
  • solicit donations of appropriate Indonesian and Portuguese texts and other resources from Australia's Indonesian and Portuguese-speaking communities,
  • offer your specialist skills, useful contacts and networks to help the project,
  • assist with weeding incoming book donations (always needed!),
  • coordinate storage and transport of resources locally and to East Timor,
  • organise training resources and programs and ongoing support of UNTL library staff,
  • keep us informed of other community and institutional efforts of support for the UNTL Library so that we can promote them, give them recognition on the Web site,
  • assist the Friends Groups by providing operational support such storage space, translation services, administration assistance and minor operational costs.

Raising Funds and Soliciting Donations

  • network amongst your professional or community groups or colleagues, family and friends to raise funds or appropriate donations
  • approach relevant faculties (Engineering, Agriculture, Political Science, Economics, Education/Teacher Training, Linguistics, Sciences, Mathematics, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Law and others) to raise funds for related Indonesian texts
  • request large libraries and educational institutions with purchasing power to approach appropriate suppliers for donations of library supplies, equipment and furnishings
  • encourage larger organisations or institutions to nominate a specific target donation (such as a photocopier or audiovisual equipment) for fundraising amongst members
  • approach target companies and organisations for donations of specific equipment and resources
  • research possible donor foundations and trusts, and their specific funding guidelines
  • raise funds within the large Australian library community (if each librarian and library technician donated $5-10 or more we could purchase specialist library equipment)
  • coordinate approaches to specialist publishers for book, serial and audiovisual donations
  • approach information database suppliers to provide long-term access to online and CDROM databases to complement those already offered

More detailed lists of the ways in which people can help this project (both here and in Dili) are outlined in the draft paper - Friends Group Strategic Plans.

(Please coordinate efforts with the Friends Group to maximise effect and avoid duplication of efforts)
